Out of the Past, Mencken Still Up-to-Date

     The more I read, hear and see about today’s political and media society, the more I return to the writings of H. L. Mencken, the Sage of Baltimore.  
 
     He said, at various times:
 
     “As the arteries grow hard, the heart grows soft.”
 
     “Democracy is a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance.”
 
     “Democracy is only a dream:  it should be put in the same category as Santa Claus and Heaven.” 

     And, “Giving every man a vote has no more made men wise and free than Christianity has made them good.”

Everybody who loves politics, should take time to read the wit and wisdom of the great journalist of yonder years.
